DUTIES OF THE STAIN GLASS MONITOR

A Monitor is a club member who oversees and helps in the glass studio. Their job is to be an active supervisor in the glass studio. They are not TUTORS.

Responsibilities of the Monitor

1. Safety of the persons working in the studio.

2. Care and security of equipment, furnishings, patterns, etc.

3. Recognition of hazardous conditions and appropriate actions.

4. Collect monies for dues and items sold and write receipts.

Duty Times

The studio is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

First shift is from 9am to 12:30 pm.

Second shift is from 12:30 pm to 4pm.

Duties of Monitors

5. Open the front door with the key from the lockbox outside the studio door. Turn the key in the door latch so that the door stays unlocked.

6. Unlock the closet door.

7. Return the key to the lockbox

8. Initial the “Monitor Calendar List” on the bulletin board

9. First shift turns off the showcase window light. The switch is located beside the front door. Second shift turns on the showcase window light except on Fridays.

10. Wear one of the vests provided.

11. Greet all people who enter the studio. Ask “May I help you?” And, ask all people to sign the attendance participation sheet in the Blue Binder.

Collecting Monies

You will accept money and write receipts for a variety of reasons.

1. Club membership dues

a. Single membership is 24.00 per year (dues), family membership is $36.00 per year

b. New membership may be prorated © $2.00 per month for a single member and @ $3.00 per month for a family.

c. Have all members complete a membership form that includes Name, Address, Phone Number, Email Address and indicates areas of interest

2. Orientation classes

a. Orientation classes must be taken before paying dues

b. The classes are $30.00

3. Advanced classes

a. Classes are listed in the class binder

b. Costs are listed on the information sheet

4. Finished stained glass items

a. Items in the show case window, if priced are for sale

b. Various items displayed around the room with price tags are for sale

How to use the Receipt Book

Use the 3-part receipt book when collecting monies.

a. We prefer checks . Checks should be made out Sun City Stained Glass Club .

b. Give the WHITE copy to the customer.

c. Place the YELLOW copy with the check or money in the wooden box on the counter.

d. Leave the PINK copy in the receipt book.    

e. Write Cash or Check with the check number and sign your name on the receipt. Make sure there is a phone number on the check

OTHER DUTIES

1. Answer the phone. Take a message that includes who, time of call, and the phone number

2. Read the Blue Binder. Check all tabs and forms.

3. Read the Class Offerings binder

4. Set room temperature. Normal settings are:

Heat @ 65 deg

Air conditioning @ 78.

5. Ensure that users confine activities to club equipment for which they have been certified. Check the bulletin board for authorization for the Taurus saw list or any other specialized equipment.

6. Know the rules concerning the usage of major equipment

7. Assist with library

8. Assist with the patterns in the binders

a. Members may remove a pattern from plastic sheath for photocopying in the room.

b. If a larger copier bed is needed, members need to leave a note with their name and the date of removal in the binder in place of the pattern. All patterns should be returned in a timely manner (next day at the latest).

9. The toolbox is on the shelf in the closet. Inside the toolbox are chains for hanging items.

EMERGENCIES

1. The first aid kit and bandages are in the second drawer under the back counter.

a. Apply pressure only to a major cut area.

b. Some people are on blood thinners. Ask the person.

2. If a major injury occurs requiring a trip to the emergency room, call 911.

a. An accident report must be filled out.

b. The form is in the blue binder.

3. If a handicapped person falls, do not try to pick them up. CALL FOR HELP – 911.

4. Our member, Bill Briggs has two sisters to call. Barbara Hallmark (864-3880) and Susan Lambert (863-4000).

EQUIPMENT

IF AT ANY TIME THE EQUIPMENT DOES NOT SOUND RIGHT – TURN IT OFF IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT USE IT ANYMORE.

CALL SOMEONE ON THE EQUIPMENT REPAIR COMMITTEE. (See list on bulletin board).

1.   Grinders

a. Only 4 grinders are left out on counters daily and are set up by members as required.  All grinders are cleaned by the members who use them.  Additional standard grinders are available in the closet. They may be set up by members and then cleaned and returned to the closet after use. The belt sander is left out

b. Standard Grinder Setup

i. Fill with COLD water

ii. Add one capful of grinder coolant

iii. Thoroughly wet the small sponge

iv. Secure the grid top

v. Place plastic back splash round and under grinder

vi. Use glass eye shield covering the grinder top

c. During the day, ensure that water level is full enough so there is no white powder

d.  During the day, ensure that small platforms have enough water so no white powder

2.  Diamond Max (Red Devil)

a. Setup

i. Use one drop of soap.

ii. The upper water is open or closed depending on usage

iii. The white cup collects water run off.

b. Wipe off when finished

3. Taurus Glass Saw (AUTHORIZED USERS ONLY)

a. Setup

i. Use one drop of soap.

ii. Use 2 tbsp of white vinegar.

b. Follow written rules and usage learned in glass saw class.

c. Who ever takes it out also cleans and returns it to the closet.

4.   Zinc Came Saw

a. Always wear eye protection

b. Make sure the electrical cord is not under the blade

c. Clean up when done

i. Dump shavings in trash can

ii. Wipe up

iii. Clean the table or counter of dust residue

d. DO NOT CHANGE THE SAW BLADE

i. The equipment maintenance committee is responsible for changing the blade

SECOND SHIFT

1. Check grinders when you first arrive. Usage can cause loss of water. Add water as needed.

2. Ask members before they leave to clean up tools, space, tables, floor, and check the floor for solder droppings.  The courtesy rule is if you use it, you clean it up.

END OF DAY CLEAN UP

1. Make sure all grinders are cleaned and unplugged. If necessary, wash grinder trays.  NEVER SUBMERGE UNIT IN WATER .

2. Rinse the sponge and table top grid thoroughly and dry.

3. Wash back splash items

4. Wash, sponge clean the counter tops of all grit.

5. Place wet towels so they can dry on drying rack in store room. Only dry towels should be placed in the yellow laundry basket. Remember, we have towels. Please use them. You will find them in the closet. We ask for volunteers to wash dirty towels and return them to the brown container in the closet.

6. Sweep the floor and brush the table tops.

7. Wash out sinks.

8. When leaving, turn off lights, fans, and ventilation system. Turn on the showcase window light except for Fridays. Close the closet door. Lock the front door and return key to the lock box.

A MONITOR IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE AN EXPERT ON STAINED GLASS. IF YOU DON’T KNOW SOMETHING, REFER TO THE MEMBER ROSTER. ASK THEM TO CALL ANOTHER CLUB MEMBER WHO MIGHT KNOW THE ANSWER.
