Why Switch to IE 7 (even though you like IE 6)

MS plans another automatic update for IE 7 on Feb 12, 2008; it will be marked as an Update Rollup package. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946202

IE is the most used software by the average PC user so why not get the latest version.

IE 7 offers a new simple streamlined interface, making it easier to work with and manage e.g. your Favorites

Can I block IE 7 update from downloading

Displaying Menubar

Setting Internet Explorer 7.0 as the Default Browser

Follow these steps to set Internet Explorer 7.0 as the default browser so that whenever you click on a link, Internet Explorer will be the browser that is loaded.

Go to Tools -> Internet Options> Programs tab or

o       in Vista: Start> type default> Default Programs> Set your default programs

Click the Make Default button. If that button is disabled, that means that Internet Explorer is already the default browser If you checkmark the option "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser", then every time you start Internet Explorer, you will encounter the following dialog if it is not set as the default browser.

If you do not want to set Internet Explorer as the default browser, you should go to your browser of choice and set that as you default browser. Then uncheck the options "Always perform this check when starting Internet Explorer" and/or the option "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default browser" in the above two dialogs of Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE 7) Full Screen Mode

Internet Explorer 7.0 has a full-screen mode feature. Suppose you are viewing a website and want to see more of it at one time without needing to scroll.

Just press F11 and the browser frame and header disappear and the browser area fills your entire screen...

All you see is the scroll bars and the status bar at the bottom.

But now how do you get back the regular browser window Just press F11 again.

Or if you want access to the controls, move your mouse cursor to the top of the screen and the browser controls reappears...

Internet Explorer 7.0: Tabbed Windows

The most notable and much awaited feature of Internet Explorer 7.0 is its tabbed windows -- also known as tabbed browsing.

Let's say that you are currently on a website and want to look at another website. Instead of starting up another instance of Internet Explorer, you can put the second website in a different tab of the same Internet Explorer.

Opening New Tabs

To open another tab, do Ctrl-T or click the empty new tab.

Closing Tabs

To close a tabbed window, you simply click the X icon on the current tab...

        or do Ctrl-W.

If you want to close a tab other than the current tab, you can right-click on the tab that you want to close. Then select Close from the context menu.

If you have a lot of tabs open and you want to close all tabs except for one, then right click on the one tab that you want to remain open. And then select Close Other Tabs from the context menu.

Opening Links in Tabs

Normally when you click on a link on a webpage, the destination page will replace the current page. If you want the destination page to go onto a new tab, you click the link while holding down the Ctrl key

Alternatively, you can right-click on the link and select Open in New Tab from the context menu. This is great when you are on a page with several interesting links that you want to look at later. You simply open them in new window without having to leave your current page. And when you are done with the current page, you got all the link destinations in the other tabs to go back to.

Normally, when you type a new URL into the address bar and hit Enter, the new URL will replace the page in the current tab. If instead you want the new URL to go into a new tab, hit Alt-Enter instead.

Multiple Homepages

Having multiple tab capabilities also means that you can have multiple home pages in Internet Explorer 7.0.

Setting Up a Home Page

To set up a default home page in Internet Explorer 7.0, you navigate to the web page. Then click the drop down arrow of the Home icon and select Add or Change Home Page from the context menu.

In the resulting dialog, select Webpage as your only home page and click Yes.

Now every time you launch Internet Explorer, you this website will load.

Or:

Click on Tools on Toolbar and click Internet Options and type in name of Home Page desired e.g. www.sctxcompclub.org, click Apply then OK

Loading Addition Homepages

If you want Internet Explorer to load additional websites upon startup, you can add additional home pages in other tabs. To do so, navigate to the site you want to add. Then click the drop down arrow of the Home icon and select Add or Change Home Page from the context menu as before.

This time, select Add this webpage to your home page tabs in the resulting dialog.

Now both sites will load upon Internet Explorer 7.0 startup. This is handy if you always like to have your favorite search engine up and also your web mail and also you favorite news site, etc.

Removing Homepages

What if you don't want any sites to load upon browser start up You just want an empty page so the browser doesn't have to take extra time loading sites.

Go to the Home icon context menu again and select Remove. Now you can remove individual homepages or you can remove all home pages with the Remove All menu item. We are going to select the Remove All menu.

Say yes to the resulting dialog...

And now when the browser loads, you will see a blank page.

Exit Options in Internet Explorer 7.0

If you click the upper-right close icon of Internet Explorer 7.0, you are not closing just the current window. You are closing all of the tabs along with the browser. And Internet Explorer 7.0 warns you of this with the following dialog.

But after a while, this dialog might get annoying. In which case, you can click the Show Options button and checkmark the "Do not show me this dialog again" option...

You might have noticed that there is also the "Open these the next time I use Internet Explorer" option -- which is great when you want to "remember" the pages that you have open so that you come back to it later. Your pages will be "remembered" even if you had turned off your computer.

Find More Search Providers/Select Default Search Provider

Click down arrow to right of search box (note the default e.g. Google)

Select Find More Providers if desired then select from the list.

Click the down arrow (right of search box) then select Change Search Defaults then for example click Ask.com then Set as Default then OK. This will make Ask your default.

Add to Favorities e.g. Hewlett Packard

Open IE 7 then in the Search Box (top right) type HP and Enter. Right click on the HP Web page and from the menu select Add to Favorites.

Select and change Name, if desired, then click the Add button.

Adding a RSS Feed

It is not perfect e.g. if sites dont specify their feeds in standard ways, IE7 wont notice them on its own.

        Example: bring up google.com

Note that the Feeds Icon turns orange i.e. it is available. Click on down arrow next to icon and select subscribe to this feed. Subscribe (bottom of yellow box) then close. Now when you click Favorites then Feeds then you will be delivered the latest updated news via your IE browser.

Adding & Managing Add-ons

Add-ons are a great help while using the Web with most being free.

Open IE 7, click down arrow next to Tools (Toolbar) then hold your cursor over Manage Add-on and select Find More Add-ons where you can choose from the options.
