Using the word processor that comes with the Windows OS-- “Wordpad”
Click on
Start Button - Programs - Accessories - Wordpad

Word Processors use Word Wrap -- Do
Not hit Enter Key at the end of a line of typing. It automatically goes to the next
line. Only hit enter at the end of a paragraph or if you wish to have a blank line between
typed lines.
Creating a Document
Page Formatting
Set Margins On the Menu bar - Click on File - then Page Setup
defaults are set (Wordpad 1-1/4” -top & bottom and 1” sides)
OR drag the rectangle on the side of the ruler
Paragraph Formatting (always use TABS not spaces)
Set Tabs (default is every 1/2 inch)
Just click on the Ruler where you want the tab to be
To Clear
Drag off Ruler
OR
To Format - Tabs - Clear or Clear All
Character
Formatting
Choose Font -- On the Menu Bar click on Format - Font (Or Formatting Bar)
Choose point size - 12 is average
(72 pts is an inch)
If you want Bold, Italic or Underline? (under Format - Font OR use Format Bar)
Choose the
desired alignment from the Format Bar
Insert Date
& Time (on the Toolbar)
Click and choose style
Goes to where the insertion point is flashing
Type your
document
EDITING TEXT
Insert and Typeover -- To change use Insert Key on the keyboard
Selection
---> Reason -- to apply formatting changes
To cut, copy, or delete
Replace
---> To select the
entire document - On Menu Bar, Click Edit & Select All
When you highlight,there is no longer an insertion point because the next character you type
replaces the whole selection. (Be very careful when whole document is highlighted) Don’t
forget “UNDO”
---> To select via
dragging the mouse -
Place the Insertion Point at the beginning of the text you wish to select by Clicking the I-Beam
there, then holding down on the mouse drag the I-beam to the end and let up.

clicking the mouse -
If you wish to highlight a large amount of text, the easiest way is to place the insertion point at
the beginning of the text you wish to highlight (Click there). Then move the mouse pointer to
end of the text and hold down “shift” and Click. The whole area will be highlighted.
---> Other Ways to select:
Place cursor where desired and hold down Shift key and use Arrow Keys
One word -- Double Click somewhere on the desired word
One paragraph -- Triple click somewhere in the desired paragraph
Put mouse in the margin -- can tell when mouse changes shape (points rt)
Select current line - Click
Select current paragraph - Double Click
Select entire document - Triple Click or use “Ctrl & A” keys
To Unselect items - move the mouse pointer to a blank space in your document -

Deleting Characters
Place
insertion point in the desired place
Backspace Key will delete the character to the left of the insertion point
Delete Key will delete the character to the right of the insertion point
Delete a
block

Press Backspace or Delete Key
COPY & MOVE

On the Menu Bar Click on Edit - then Cut OR Copy (or use Cut/Copy Icon)
(Or rt click and select from dropdown
menu
Copy will leave the text in the document
Cut will remove the text in the document
Sends to Clipboard
Place
insertion point where you want text to appear
On the Menu
Bar Click on Edit - then Paste (or use Paste Icon)
Clipboard
Maintains
last text, even after Paste is used.
Will remain
on Clipboard until replaced by the next cut or copy command or system is turned off.
Undo (Icon on Toolbar)
Will undo
delete or formatting changes
Changing the Appearance
Select the
text you want to change
Use the
format bar
Bullets - put the insertion point anywhere in the paragraph and Click on the
Bullets Icon or if you want to Bullet several paragraphs, highlight and then Click on the Bullet
Icon To remove the Bullets, highlight then Click on the Bullet Icon
Save
Always Save
before printing. If this document does not have a name - Name the Document, then Click OK

Choose Icon
on Toolbar

pointer on page, when it is a magnifying glass, Click to zoom
