Sun City Computer Club

Procedure for Slide Scanning

Preparation for Scanning to be done at home before coming to the CyberCenter:

1.     Stop-in the CyberCenter and sign up for a 1 hour secession on 1 of the 2 computers Doug 2 (L11) or Gary (L5) with a Minolta Scanner attached.

2.     Review all slides and sort into groups of those that will definitely be scanned, those which are lower priority for scanning, and those not worth scanning.

3.     Group the slides according to some logical (for you) grouping. There is a lighted slide sorter available for use in the meeting room if needed.

4.     A naming convention for all slides and grouping folders should be devised. This will allow easy saving and retrieval of the slides. For Example: on D drive, Fred Pictures, Vacation1994, slide name.

5.     Decide what purpose each slide is to be used for. This will determine the scanning resolution to be used. You should use the highest resolution consistent with the purpose for scanning.

6.     Bring a CD or a USB Flash Drive to class so that your scanned slides can be downloaded and taken with you when you leave. The Flash Drive is by far the more convenient vehicle for transporting digital images home after scanning.

7.     Plan on doing about 40 slides per hour.

Scanning Session:

1.    The scanning is to be done on Computer Doug 2 (L11) or Computer Gary (L5) in the lab area.

2.    It has a hard drive D which should be used for storing the scanned slides. (20 GBytes)

3.    The Minolta scanner has its own software to use in scanning the slides.

4.    Plan on doing only minimal adjustments to the slides on this computer.

Loading Slides into the Four Slide Holder:

1.    2 Slide Holders are located in upper cabinets

2.    Hold the slide holder with the slots up and the numbers upside down.

3.    Insert the slides emulsion side down/shiny side up and the top of the picture inserted first the long side of the slide should be parallel to the length of the slide holder... This generally means that the mfg print is below, not on top.

4.    Slides should be parallel with the length of the holder.

5.    If pictures were taken vertically, rather than horizontally, use the same procedure as above, then rotate after pictures are scanned.

Procedures for Minolta Dimage Scan Dual IV Scanner

  1. Be sure you are logged onto XPLabUser.

  1. Select the Minolta Slide Scanner Icon from the desktop to activate the scanner and program.

  1. Before opening the Batch Scan Utility, select the Batch Scan Settings to check the settings. Set up all settings as indicated at the end of this document. On the Batch Scan Setting page, in the destination box, choose browse and select the folder in the D drive that you set up in #2 above. All pictures will then be automatically stored in that folder.

  1. Select the Batch Scan Settings and then the Batch Scan Setup; setup Preferences, Scan Settings, & Image Correction according to the pages at the end of this document. Click OK.

  1. Click the Batch Scan Utility which scans four slides at a time without intervention. If you wish to scan less than 4 slides at a time, select Cancel after the last slide in the batch has scanned.

  1. Open the front door to 35mm marker.

  1. Click on Batch Scan Utility, and inset the slide holder to the white arrow, and the scanner will pull in the holder and begin processing. DO NOT TOUCH THE HOLDER WHEN IT IS BEING PROCESSED.

  1. When processing is completed, the holder will eject and new slides can be inserted.

  1. Repeat step #10 above.

  1. Continue scanning until about 10 minutes is left in the session. The folder containing your slides should be written to your CD to preserve them. Dont depend on them being on the D drive until your next session.

Post Scanning Session:

1.    Processing of the slides from your CD can be done on the other computers in the lab area which have Photoshop Elements 2 installed on them and which have a CD burner. The processing will depend on the status of the slide. This can consist of brightness/contrast adjustment, cropping, color adjustment and removal of numerous defects.

2.    Creation of slide shows from the slides can also be done in Photoshop Elements, PowerPoint, Picture It, ProShow Gold, or other software.

3.    Slides can be put into albums in software such as Photoshop Album.
