Membership, Peggy Uselton

Peggy Uselton reported that there were 1,605 members as of May 31, 2005 . There were 40 new members who joined in May. The total number of new members who have joined in 2005 is 284. We now have 94.3% of last year’s membership.

Twenty-seven new members attended the New Member Reception held at 6:30 p.m. on May 24. Seventy-seven invitations were sent. This was a much higher response rate than we had at the morning reception on March 29. Our next scheduled reception will be on August 30. It was agreed that the next meeting would be an evening meeting, subject to availability of space, in either the Atrium or the Meeting Rooms.

Programs, Rex Davenport

The June programs are:

June 6 – “Hard Drive Technology” by Gene Barlow

June 13 – “I’m Glad You Asked” by Jane Greig

June 20 – Ask the Experts

June 27 – “CD’s/DVD’s” by Chelanie Israel

Questions for the experts on June 20 will be requested in advance in the newsletter. The August and September programs will be reported next month.

Training, Joe Razek

May was a fair month with 81 total enrollments. Photoshop 101 and 102 were both filled. Scanning 101 was cancelled. ProShow Gold had low enrollment with three students. All other classes had adequate enrollment.

With respect to June, enrollments are on the slow side. Two courses have filled. Four more courses have made, but not filled. Two courses (Digital Cameras and Genealogy in the Computer Age) have three or less people enrolled and will probably be cancelled if enrollments don’t pick up. In addition, we have cancelled one course (Windows 102) because of the instructor’s illness. The courses that are doing well are either core courses or photography-related courses.

Right now, our biggest problem is attracting and keeping instructors. The problem has been especially acute this month. We have lost our some of our best instructors for a series of reasons unrelated to the Computer Club. Joe has recruited new people to teach these courses. With enough qualified instructors, we would be able to rotate them among these courses. We also need more assistants, especially in Intro to PC 102 and Windows 102.

Special Interest Groups, Doug Willoughby

The following SIGs will be meeting all summer: Digital Camera, Mac Beginners, Mac Advanced Users, Genealogy.

These will meet in June but not July and August: VectorVest, Kaffeeklatch and Windows Beginners.

These will not meet in June, July and August:: ProShow Gold, AOL, Hardware & Technology.

Investment Education will meet in July (1st Monday)

Media Conversion SIG leaders will meet to discuss opening the lab for media conversion only starting in September or October if we can get enough monitors. The monitors will only need to open and close the lab, not take memberships and class registrations. Right now the interest level in media conversion is down. The Board will explore this more after determining the interest level after summer.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Sun City 10 th Anniversary on June 18 – All clubs are involved in this. The Computer Club will have an open house from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The lab will be open with a Monitor, but Executive Board Members and Instructors should be available during that time to answer any questions.

Kids Camp June 23 and 30 – All arrangements have been made for the kids at the Computer Lab on these dates.

News & Views Update - Dick Smith met with the News & Views group on the Computer Club having an 8-10 minute presentation on SIGs. They did video our New Member Reception, but Dick has not heard from them on videoing our SIG discussion. The June issue of the Sun Rays shows that the Computer Club will have News & Interviews on June 27. Dick will follow up with them what is needed to complete the presentation.

NEW BUSINESS

Kids Camp – DVD copy request – The CA has asked if the Computer Club can make copies of 30 DVDs each week of the videos made during Kids Camp which will be sold the grandparents. We have five computers that can copy DVDs. It is estimated that 30 copies can be made in one to two hours using the five computers. The CA will provide the DVD-R disks and the master DVD will be ready by Friday afternoon, June 24 and July 1, after the lab closes. After discussion, it as agreed that $100 would be a reasonable flat fee to charge for 60 copies and that the CA would apply $100 to moving the Atrium Screen if that project is approved; otherwise, the CA will pay the Computer Club $100.

Antivirus for CyberCenter – The System Administrators have concluded that there is a problem with the Bit Defender and Norton Antivirus programs. These programs appear to be incompatible with the Deep Freeze Program. The current programs expire in September, and it was agreed that we would switch to AVG Antivirus Program at that time.

Alohabob PC Relocator – This is software and cables to move data and programs from computer to computer. The cost is not known. This appears to be a program that would be beneficial to mentors who help with new computer set up as well as members doing their own set up. It was agreed that the mentors who help with new computer set up should determine if this is something that the Computer Club should purchase, and if the cost is $100 or less, Don Snapp will order the software when he returns to Sun City .

OTHER BUSINESS

Peter Roll made a motion that the Computer Club purchase 30 USB optical mice for a cost up to $360 to be installed on all computers. Rex Davenport seconded the motion. A discussion followed. The motion passed unanimously.

There is still no firm bid on moving the Atrium screen and there is very little interest from most clubs to move it. Gael Miller will contact Gary Newman on a decision that will work well for everyone.

The next Executive Board Meeting will be 9:00 A.M. Thursday, August 4 2005 , at the Sun City CyberCenter Meeting Room. There will be no meeting in July.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 A.M.
