5 Minutes to Learn -- A Lifetime of Fun
What is Bocce? The Italian version of lawn bowling. The earliest known form was a
game played in the Italian Alps, early in the Christian Era, using stones, not to hit a target, but
to land as close as possible to the target. The Romans spread the game throughout the empire and
substituted balls for stones. Italian immigrants brought Bocce to the US, primarily to New York
City and San Francisco. The sport appeared to be in danger of extinction until a resurgence began
in California during the 1970s. Today it is estimated at one-million people are playing Bocce in
the US.
The Bocce facility has six courts available and they are first
class.
For fun, friendship, and moderate exercise, this is the place. Everyone can become
knowledgeable and begin play immediately.
Bocce members meet Monday through Saturday weekly between 8:00 am and 10:00
am. In the winter time when days are shorter and the weather cooler, the meeting time is 1:00
pm to 3:00 pm. Courts and equipment are available for play by anybody when the courts are not
previously scheduled.
The courts are located adjacent to the Veterans' Memorial Plaze, behind the Social
Center and the Village Store.
